At about this point every year, I really start reflecting on what lessons, strategies and practices I'm going to keep for next year, what I'm going to tweak, and what I'm dumping altogether. The number one thing that I am always sure I want to keep, is my focus on independent reading. It is a ton of work for me to keep track of each student's independent reading. It is hugely time consuming to confer with individual students every week, to assign personal learning goals and record data from the individual reading conferences, and yet, it is the one thing I am most proud of in my classroom. Here is a video validating my beliefs in meeting readers at their individual level and valuing student choice in reading. Enjoy!
