To promote summer reading with my students, I've been talking a lot about books; books I love, books that make me cry, books with action and adventure.  Obviously, I've been thinking about matching the right book to the right reader, but am I really doing a good job?  Do my recommendations represent the full gamut of children's literature that is out there, or do they just reflect my own personal tastes or cultural biases?  Is the full gamut of children's literature that is currently avaliable, diverse enough?  Could all of my students identify with the books I recommend?
Last month, Publishers Weekly  ran this article on diversity in children's literature.  It is well-worth the read for teachers, librarians and writers.   Enjoy!

Happy diversified reading,
Christine
